Derek Bailey was raised in southern Colorado (La Veta) on a small ranch. Bailey received his BS and MS degrees in Animal Science at Colorado State University (MS in animal breeding). Bailey then changed departments and finished a PhD in Range Science at Colorado State (PhD focused on grazing behavior and range nutrition). Bailey worked 5 years in Nevada as a range management consultant working primarily on grazing related issues on public lands. Bailey then did a post-doc with USDA-ARS in Woodward, Oklahoma. He also worked as a county extension agent with University of Arizona in Globe, AZ.
